Teeth Whitening Q & A
What causes tooth enamel to darken or discolor?
There are many possible causes of darkened or discolored teeth. Some of the most common are:
- Drinking coffee, dark-colored sodas, red wine, and dark-colored teas
- Smoking
- Chewing tobacco
- Eating curry and tomato-based sauces
- Taking medications like tetracycline
While the occasional cup of coffee or curry dinner won't cause stains, consuming these products regularly is almost sure to leave your teeth either dark or discolored.
While you can control exposure to the things above, one thing you can't control is aging. Over the years, your enamel wears down gradually. This reveals the darker-colored dentin below it.
Regardless of the reasons behind darkness or discoloration in your teeth, there's a teeth whitening solution that can work for you.
How does in-office teeth whitening work?
In-office teeth whitening takes only about an hour. We will place a plastic cheek retractor in your mouth to keep your teeth exposed during the treatment.
After protecting your gums and lips with a barrier gel, we apply a high-intensity whitening gel to your teeth. We may also use an LED light to accelerate the whitening process. The whole process is painless, and you’ll see dramatic results immediately.
How does teeth whitening at home work?
In addition to in-office teeth whitening, we also offer a home whitening system that can give you amazing results in two weeks or less. You'll wear custom whitening trays that we make in Alegria Dental Care's on-site dental lab.
Each day, you'll add whitening gel to the trays and wear them for the prescribed amount of time. You may need to wear the trays for as little as an hour a day, or for as long as eight hours while you sleep depending on your degree of staining and how white you want to go.
How often do I need to whiten my teeth?
This can vary widely by patient, but in general you'll be able to maintain your results for up to a year if you follow a few simple guidelines. Avoid the things that caused the stains as much as possible, and be sure to keep up with your regular check-ups to maintain your dazzling white smile for the maximum time.
