Toothache Q & A

Why do I have tooth pain?

There are many possible causes of tooth pain, but some of the most common include:

  • Severe gingivitis
  • Tooth infection
  • Tooth cracks or chips
  • Tooth abscess
  • Cavities
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Teeth misalignment
  • Damage due to teeth grinding
  • Damaged or missing filling

If you have a severe toothache, don't try to ignore it. It's likely to worsen and possibly cause permanent damage if untreated.

How can I relieve a toothache at home?

You can try several things for temporary relief:

  • Ice packs on your jaw
  • Rinsing your mouth with salt water
  • Rinsing your mouth with hydrogen peroxide
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers

Although these remedies can give you short-term relief, they won’t rid you of what’s causing your toothache. See Dr. Sunnes as soon as possible so she can get to the origin of your pain and treat it effectively.

What is the difference between tooth sensitivity and toothache?

Tooth sensitivity can be quite uncomfortable, but it's different than a toothache. If you have tooth sensitivity, you may experience sudden discomfort when you eat or drink very hot or very cold food or beverages. You may also experience tooth sensitivity when you breathe in suddenly or otherwise expose your teeth to a blast of air.

Generally, tooth sensitivity is temporary, so the discomfort stops with the exposure. On the other hand, toothaches can cause serious pain and are much more persistent. A toothache can cause pain that's just as bad or worse than any other type of pain.

We can treat tooth sensitivity in several ways. Special toothpaste and mouth rinses can dramatically reduce your tooth sensitivity.

What's the treatment for toothaches?

We will determine the appropriate toothache treatment based on your symptoms. Often, the best way to relieve toothache pain is by removing damaged tooth, gum, and nerve tissue. With the damaged tissue gone, we can restore your tooth with a filling, through root canal therapy, with a crown, or in another way. In some cases, damage may be significant enough to require tooth extraction.
