Crowns Q & A
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown — often referred to as a cap — is a restorative dental device that covers a weak, damaged, or unattractive tooth. Crowns are made from metal, porcelain, or a combination of materials. Most patients choose crowns made of porcelain-fused-to-metal because they offer the durability of metal and the natural appearance of porcelain.
Crowns are custom-made to fit your teeth precisely and are tinted to match your other teeth. Porcelain is resistant to staining and decay.
Who needs dental crowns?
You may need dental crowns for restorative or cosmetic purposes. If you have a severely chipped or cracked tooth, or if you’ve had an extensive root canal on a weakened tooth, a dental crown covers and supports your tooth. A crown often prevents the need for extraction and preserves your overall dental health. You may also have crowns placed to anchor a dental bridge.
You might also choose to have dental crowns installed to improve the appearance of your smile. If your teeth are small, unevenly sized, or if you have whitening-resistant staining, dental crowns cover imperfections and create a perfect, uniform smile.
What should I expect when I get a crown?
We usually install dental crowns in two appointments. During your first appointment, we prepare your tooth (or teeth) by removing a thin layer of tooth enamel. This procedure creates space for your crown to fit snugly over your tooth and fit in with your other teeth.
Once we have removed a bit of the enamel, we'll take an impression of your teeth. Then, we'll send the mold to a dental lab where your crowns are custom-manufactured to fit your teeth precisely. Before you leave our office, we provide a temporary crown to protect your tooth while your permanent crown is prepared.
At your second appointment, we will remove your temporary crown and install your permanent crown. We also make sure to check the fit and your bite — the way your teeth come together — before permanently bonding the crown to your tooth. Once your crown is set, we'll polish it until it shines like a natural tooth.
